Interviewer: Carmen, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. Your journey into the world of entertainment and PR is fascinating. Can you start by telling us about your early years and how they shaped your career?
Carmen Grayson: Thank you for having me. Growing up in San Francisco, I was always drawn to the limelight. I started with school plays, which fueled my passion for performance and communication. This led me to pursue a BA in Communications at Long Beach State University. My academic experiences provided a solid foundation and aligned perfectly with my interests, setting the stage for my career in PR.
Interviewer: Your transition from university to becoming “Msbayarea411” is quite interesting. How did that come about?
Carmen Grayson: After returning to the Bay Area, I started working on 106.1 KMEL alongside DJ Backside, where I provided insightful club reports. My on-air persona at 94.1 WHAP Radio further showcased my versatility. These opportunities allowed me to connect with the local entertainment scene and build a name for myself as “Msbayarea411,” a prominent voice in Bay Area podcasts.
Interviewer: Appearing on WeTv’s reality show in 2017 was a significant turning point in your career. How did this experience influence your journey?
Carmen Grayson: Being on WeTv was indeed a pivotal moment. The exposure opened many doors within Hollywood, especially in promotions for major Hip-Hop and R&B parties. Collaborating with renowned DJs and entertainment icons increased my visibility and established me as a sought-after personality in the industry.
Interviewer: Your work goes beyond traditional PR roles. Can you elaborate on your involvement in brand and marketing strategy?
Carmen Grayson: Certainly. In addition to PR, I collaborate with solopreneurs and executives to develop effective brand and marketing strategies. My focus is on creating human-to-human connections that resonate with audiences. Crafting press kits and media materials, especially for top-tier celebrities and artistic managers, has been a significant part of my role at the Barbara Sanchez PR Firm.
Interviewer: Beyond your professional achievements, you are deeply committed to social causes, particularly against domestic violence and wrongful convictions. What drives this advocacy?
Carmen Grayson: Advocacy is very close to my heart. I actively support education and resources for domestic violence victims, using my platform to address these critical issues. Additionally, I am passionate about fighting wrongful convictions, which disproportionately affect Black and Latinx individuals. Currently, I am advocating for Pierre Rushing, an Oakland native who is wrongfully imprisoned. Ensuring justice for the wrongfully convicted is a cause I am deeply committed to, and I will continue to fight for their freedom.
